Buenos Aires takes a historic step into its transportation network

Subway Line F: Buenos Aires’ Most Ambitious Infrastructure Project in 25 Years

The City of Buenos Aires has taken a historic step in urban infrastructure with Resolution RESOL-2025-568-MIGC, which authorizes the national and international public tender for the construction of Subway Line F, the first new line in 25 years. This project is part of the Sustainable Mobility Plan and aims to modernize the city’s public transportation network by strengthening integration between the subway, trains, and buses. Its implementation marks a significant milestone toward a more efficient, equitable, and sustainable mobility system for Buenos Aires.

With an investment of USD 1.35 billion, it will be the largest public works project currently underway in Argentina, requiring the coordination of multiple contractors, mixed financing schemes, and the participation of international companies specializing in tunnel construction and automated transport systems. Additionally, the acquisition of 214 new train cars for Lines A, B, and C — with an extra USD 370 million investment — complements this comprehensive renewal plan for the subway, consolidating a long-term vision to transform Buenos Aires’ urban mobility.

Main Features of the Project

  • Official budget: USD 1.35 billion

  • Execution period: 60 months (5 years)

  • Expected start: 2026

  • Type of tender: Public, national and international, multi-stage

  • Total length: 9.8 km

  • Total stations: 12 (from Barracas to Palermo)

  • First stage: Construction of 6 stations (Brandsen, Constitución, Cochabamba, Chile, Congreso, and Tucumán)

Urban and Strategic Impact

Connectivity and Integration

Line F will connect Barracas with Palermo, providing transfer points with all six existing subway lines (A, B, C, D, E, and H) and with the Roca Railway at Constitución. This will make Line F the north-south transversal axis of the network — a long-pending connection that will significantly improve travel times and overall system efficiency.

Decongestion and Efficiency

The project is designed to relieve congestion on Line C, one of the city’s most crowded lines, and to balance passenger distribution across the network. It is estimated to benefit over 300,000 daily users, streamlining transportation in densely populated areas with high work and educational demand.

Urban Renewal

The subway’s passage through Barracas, San Cristóbal, Monserrat, Recoleta, and Palermo will drive the economic and social revitalization of peripheral areas by connecting them more directly to the city’s central axis. Moreover, the project prioritizes sustainability, accessibility, and advanced technology, with stations designed to be safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient.

In Summary

Subway Line F represents a structural transformation of Buenos Aires’ metropolitan transport system, with a direct impact on mobility, sustainability, and urban equity.

Its execution will reshape connectivity between the south and north of the city, foster economic development in underserved neighborhoods, and consolidate a modern and efficient public transport network.

However, the project’s success will depend on meeting deadlines and budgets amid a challenging macroeconomic environment, and on ensuring transparency and political continuity throughout its multi-year implementation.
